I believe that nostalgia is good for the mind and the soul. It
helps to remind one about how far he or she has come till present-day. Years
ago, Dr. Constantine Sedikides told one of his colleagues about how he harbored
an unusual feeling to which his colleague believed that he was just depressed.
But the thing was that Dr. Sedikides didn’t feel that way at all. He was just
reminiscing about his home at the University of North Carolina, along with his
friends, food, games and so forth (he had moved to the University of
Southampton). He doesn’t really feel homesick as one usually would; no pain or
strong emotions, just normal. In actuality, his reminiscent of the past
strengthened his will to move forward in his life.
Not everyone would agree that nostalgia brings one a feeling
of happiness, but I for one agree that it does. This article includes how one
can cope with sadness by just being nostalgic and the many benefits of it. This
feeling can just remind one about memories of the best times of one’s life. Sure
it can make one miss the past but it also can make someone look forward to the
future. In a way, one’s past can be their motivation, well kind of. Either good
or bad, the past is still the past. One cannot change it but one can either
learn from it and improve it, or “re-live” it (as Gatsby had said, “Of course
you can repeat the past.”). In my opinion, it is always interesting to see how
one can change so much but that’s the beauty of nostalgia.
